Permit to Acquire

Firearms Permit to Acquire(PTA)

Purchasing a firearm involves more than just visiting a gun shop, buying a gun over the counter, and returning home. This process, designed for the safety and security of all Australians, is more complex and structured. A widespread misconception is that possessing a valid weapons license is sufficient to purchase a gun. However, acquiring a permit is also necessary in addition to a license. No registered dealer in QLD will allow the purchase of a firearm without a valid license and a permit to acquire it. This ensures compliance with regulations and promotes responsible gun ownership.

About firearm licenses

In Queensland, firearm licenses are categorized to specify the types of firearms and their intended uses:
Category A: Covers air rifles, rimfire rifles (except self-loading), shotguns (except pump-action or self-loading), and their combinations, mainly for recreational shooting and hunting. Category B: Includes centerfire rifles (except self-loading), muzzle-loading firearms, and combinations not in Category A for those requiring firearms with more range or power for activities like hunting larger game. Category H: For handguns, such as air pistols, rimfire, centerfire, and muzzle-loading handguns, used mostly in sport or target shooting, by security personnel, or for certain professional needs. Each category demands adherence to specific requirements, including safety courses and storage regulations, to ensure firearms are owned and used responsibly.

About PTA (Permits to Acquire)

Many potential customers visit us with a valid license but no Permit to Acquire (PTA), which unfortunately means we cannot sell them a firearm. We highly recommend applying for your PTA as early as possible to ensure you can purchase your firearm without unnecessary delays or disappointment. The good news is that obtaining your PTA usually doesn't take long and won't significantly delay your purchase. You can apply for a PTA online or at your local police station. The online application process is straightforward and can be completed from the comfort of your home. If you need assistance or guidance through the application steps, our friendly staff are here to help. Feel free to call us or visit our store for support.
